- The six senior partner/shareholders of HLC together
represent more than 140 years of litigation practice in the
courts of British Columbia and Canada
- The three most senior counsel have all been appointed
Queen’s Counsel
- Four of our senior counsel have been listed in Best
Lawyers in Canada; three have been individually recognized as
leading practitioners in the Chambers Global Guide to the
World’s Leading Lawyers for Business; three are recognized as
leading corporate-commercial litigators in the current Lexpert
Guide and two are listed in the Lexpert/American Lawyer Guide
to the Leading 500 Lawyers in Canada
- Two of our senior counsel are Fellows of the American College of Trial Lawyers; three are Fellows of the International Society of Barristers
Diverse Academic Preparation for Practice
- Among our nineteen counsel we have graduates from the
University of British Columbia, the University of Victoria,
Simon Fraser University, University of Alberta, University of
Toronto, McGill, Queen's, Osgoode Hall, University of
Lethbridge, Dalhousie, Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth, Stanford, Cambridge, the London School of Economics and the
University of Canterbury in New Zealand
- Three of our lawyers have graduate degrees in law
- Six of our nineteen counsel were Judicial Law Clerks at
the Supreme Court of Canada
- Eight of our nineteen counsel were law clerks in British
Columbia, five in the Court of Appeal, three in the British
Columbia Supreme Court
- One of our lawyers also clerked in the Ontario Court of
Appeal; one in the Federal Court of Appeal
Contributing to the Profession
- One of our lawyers has co-authored the leading text on
Commercial Arbitration in Canada; another wrote a guide to
Conducting a Civil Appeal in British Columbia; another has
just completed the second edition of his text, Using
International Law in Canadian Courts
- Our lawyers have also written chapters in the Continuing
Legal Education Society’s books on Injunctions – British
Columbia Law and Practice, British Columbia Civil Trial
Handbook and CLE’s Annual Review of Law and Practice, as well
as the chapter on Professional Conduct for the text,
Barristers and Solicitors in Practice
- One of our lawyers was named 2009 Lawyer of the Year by
Pro Bono Law B.C. for his contribution to their pro bono
program
- One of our senior lawyers was the President of the Law
Society of British Columbia in 2008, is currently
Vice-President of the Federation of Law Societies of Canada
and is a Life Bencher
- The firm's associate counsel, Martin Taylor, served for 17
years as a judge first of the Supreme Court of British
Columbia and latterly the BC Court of Appeal. He has been
awarded both the BC Law Society's Begbie Award for exceptional
service to the profession and the UBC Law Alumni Association
Lifetime Achievement Award.
- Two of the co-founders of the firm have been appointed
judges of the Supreme Court of British Columbia
